Maria is a ‘materials led’, mixed media artist whose work draws on emotive subject matter, and the roles of masculinity and femininity. Maria’s paintings have been shown both in solo and group exhibits (including St Anne’s and Pelham House) and she has just won an award (May 2012) from the Georgia Museum of Art for her painting ‘Red Crucifixion’. A pivotal point in Maria’s career was being granted funding by the Arts Council back in 2002, this turned out not only to be a cathartic experience, it also enabled Maria’s work to gain recognition amongst many of her peers. Her work has received press coverage and been critiqued by Olivier Stevens and Kate Blok. Maria has a first class honors degree in Fine Art. Her work is concerned with depicting her emotional landscape and also unburdening herself. This is achieved in a minimal and modernist manner, developed from her materials led approach, using oils, acrylics, stitch, charcoal and pencil.
